The Samples PLUS expert analysis is the result of a study of up to 5 samples of the substrate, ground, and paint layer, selected by the client from a work of art.

The document is up to 2 pages long and includes data on the artwork provided by the client (DOES NOT INCLUDE a photograph of the object). The analysis allows for the estimation of the artwork’s creation period within a range of 35–50 years.

Methods used in the Samples PLUS expert analysis:

• Microscopic examination of the samples

• X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF)

• Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)

Processing time: up to 5 business days.

Important:The research is conducted using XRF and FTIR methods, enabling the identification of both inorganic and organic pigments, including binding agents and the aging degree of oil, as well as determining the age of the wooden substrate. The report includes information about the author and the title of the artwork but does not contain a photo reference to the object.

Sample Collection Guidelines

The most suitable samples for research are:

1. Ground layer

2. White pigments

3. Paints in yellow, red, green, blue, or violet (as they may contain dating pigments)

Before sampling, ensure that there are no later/restoration overpaints in the selected area. The sample should be taken with a sharp blade (scalpel), and the area should be cleaned of varnish before collection.

Each sample (typically 1 mm in size) should be wrapped in smooth white paper (e.g., note paper 10×10 cm). Do not use adhesive paper (tape) or synthetic material envelopes, as this may complicate or prevent further research.

The Samples PLUS expert analysis is available for objects located outside Kyiv or for large-sized artworks that are difficult to transport.
